Ask the insurance expert

Do I lose my no claims bonus on my other car?

Monday, 18 Aug 2008 14:42
A reader from Norfolk has lost his no claims bonus after an accident. However he is worried he may lose the discount on his other car.

Ian Durrell, myfinances.co.uk insurance expert from the Only Group, which includes onlyinsurance.com, tackles the issue.

Ashley from Denver asks:

I have just made a claim on my car which is insured by swiftcover. The accident wasn't my fault but they haven't proven it yet so my no claims is affected.

Does this mean that I have lost my no claims bonus on my other car as well?

This car is insured with a different company.

Ian replies:

Each car carries its own no claims bonus so this should not affect that insurance, but the owner has a duty to inform the insurer that a claim is in progress or at least once it has been settled.

In the case of non fault neither no claims bonus will be affected.
