Insurance for your laptop?

Tuesday, 05 Feb 2008 14:44
A reader from Bristol wants to buy insurance for just his laptop and in particular his photos, MP3s and data, but isn't sure if there are policies available on the market.

Our team of experts at insurance company LV= offers a helping hand.

George from Bristol asks:

I rent and the only thing I have of value is my laptop - or rather the data on it - is there way of getting insurance just for this?

The team at LV= responds:

The answer to this really depends on what exactly the data is.

I am not aware of a specific policy that just covers data, however you can get it as part of a contents insurance policy. Some insurers let you choose the value of your contents so just go for the lowest amount you can as this will keep the cost down.

Working on the basis you mean downloads, most insurers will cover downloads as part of their policy – as long as you can prove you paid for the download.

So for example, if you store lots of music on your computer and the computer is then damaged or stolen, you would need to send you insurer either a receipt, email or copy of your card statement showing how much you have spent and they will then reimburse the cost for replacing the download. This will cover any ‘paid for’ downloads.

What is worth noting is that an insurer will only pay out if the laptop is damaged or stolen – they won’t pay out if your PC crashes and you lose the data.
