My tree causing a neighbour's structural problems?

Monday, 18 Aug 2008 14:40
A reader from Walsall is facing the problem of a tree on his property causing structural problems to his neighbour's home.

But should he tell his insurance company if no claim has been made?

Ian Durrell, myfinances.co.uk insurance expert from the Only Group, which includes onlyinsurance.com, tackles the issue.

Eamon from Walsall asks:

Our neighbour has had structural problems with his house. His insurers employed an arborist who says our trees need to be cut down as they are causing the problem.

We have not cut the trees down and we are now changing our insurance company.

There has not been an insurance claim as such, but do we have to let our new insurance company know.

Ian replies:

While some people may tell you only to tell the home insurance company if they specifically ask about an impeding case, the advice should be to let the insurer know in all cases.

That way you can cover your back if there are problems later on.
