Ask the mortgage expert

Relocating? Will I get a mortgage?

Tuesday, 08 Apr 2008 17:15
A reader from Cambridgeshire is planning to move to Scotland but is unsure how she can secure a mortgage without a new job.

Drawing on years of experience, mortgage adviser Katie Tucker - technical manager at fee-free whole of market mortgage broker charcol.co.uk - takes her through the situation and what it means for her finances.

Rose from Cambridge asks:

My partner and I have split up.

I want to move to Scotland but don't have a job there yet, although I have a house to sell and will be able to put down a 50 per cent deposit.

Will I be able to get a mortgage?

Many thanks

Katie replies:

As soon as you have an acceptance letter for a job, a lender should be able to consider you, as long as you are working in a similar role to the job you have now.

Please take good legal advice if you are buying in Scotland, as their legal system is different and you are committed to the purchase very early after you have offered on it, not as late as exchange like here.
