Lloyds TSB has released a list of the oddest reasons for requesting a personal loan, which includes people seeking money for suits of armour and ice cream vans.

The list revealed that one hopeful borrower had asked for £15,000 to buy a camel, while another wanted £20,000 to turn a cave into a house.

Personal loans for plastic surgery, by contrast, seem positively normal - but make Lloyds' list nonetheless.

"Most customers come to us to borrow money for more traditional pursuits such as DIY, holidays, or even a used car. But our annual list is a refreshing reminder that Brits still have a healthy dose of eccentricity and ambition," noted Tony Gibbons, director of Lloyds TSB Personal Loans.

Lloyd's top "alternative" reasons for taking out a personal loan

  • £20,000 to convert a cave into a house
  • £15,000 for a camel
  • £1,000 for a sheep
  • £5,000 for a suit of armour
  • £3,000 for an ice cream van
  • £3,000 for plastic surgery
  • £10,000 for a black stallion
  • £20,000 for a dowry payment
  • £7,000 for a houseboat
