Alliance & Leicester converted from mutual building society status in 1997 and now boasts some 1.64 million active current accounts and 5.5 million customers.

The bank's range of current accounts includes a series of premium accounts offering bonuses including higher interest on balances, travel insurance and zero per cent overdrafts for a year.
