HSBC launches green current account

Monday, 02 Jul 2007 08:06
HSBC has released a green option for current account customers wanting a more environmentally-friendly option.

From today customers of the HSBC Bank Account, HSBC Basic Bank Account, HSBC Plus and HSBC Premier current account can go green.

People taking this option means will no longer receive paper monthly statements, cheque books, paying-in books, letters or paper direct mail relating to their current account.

What is more, customers can ask for their terms and conditions and other account documentation can be provided electronically as well.

Not only will there be less paper used, HSBC will donate £5 to WWF, Earthwatch and The Climate Group for every customer that goes green before August 26th.

Customers taking the green option also get discounts with certain environmentally-friendly firms such as Ecotricity, the Natural Collection, or Ecologist magazine.

"The green account option will remove around 95 per cent of the paper normally associated with a current account - 100 pages in a customer’s first year and around 80 pages every year afterwards," said HSBC’s head of current accounts Mike Oliver.

"For us, this is another step on our journey towards greener banking. We already plan to extend the green bank account option to Student, Graduate and Youth accounts in the next few months and we are looking to launch more green initiatives and products going forward."
