Abbey launches new student account

Saturday, 02 Aug 2008 00:41
Abbey is launching a new student account in preparation for the new academic year.

The account offers a £50 sweeten to those signing up along with a £2,000 overdraft and four per cent interest when the balance is in the black up to £500.

The interest-free overdraft rises is set at £1,000 in the first year, rising to £1,250 in year two, £1,500 in year three, £1,800 in the fourth year and £2,000 in a fifth year.

The interest on agreed overdrafts over these limits is at 9.9 per cent.

The student account also offers standard features such as Visa debit or electron card, cheque book and phone and internet banking.

Steve Shore, director of Abbey Banking, said: "Going to university is exciting but can be a difficult time when it comes to finances. Key to successful financial planning at university is making sure your money, when you have it, is working for you and also that your debts are not costing you too much.

"This is why our new student account has an interest rate of four per cent for balances up to £500 as well as a generous interest free overdraft which increases over the time you spend at university."

An account for international students is also being launched with six per cent interest on balances up to £500, a visa electron card and free foreign cheque presentation.

The account comes with a £5 monthly fee.
