Don’t Get Stung this Spring – Confused.com Suggest Those with Outbuildings Take Out Contents Insurance
Thursday, 13 Mar 2008 12:22
Although often an afterthought, it is prudent for those with garages or garden sheds to ensure that they are kept locked this spring. The contents of a garage or shed can run into hundreds of pounds, and thus replacing them can be an alarmingly costly experience. As such, it is advisable to have some level of security, or at very least contents cover on their home insurance.
March, 2008 – An unfortunate corollary of the onset of spring is that garden tools become more valuable to both their owners and thieves alike. So as the sun climbs higher in the sky, and the thoughts of many turn to spending more time in the garden, one should also give a thought to ensuring one’s possessions are protected.
It’s not merely garden tools that are at stake, either. Many choose the shed or garage as the perfect spot to house bicycles, surfboards, canoes, and other sports or activity-related equipment – which could otherwise wet or muddy up the house. When these are taken into consideration, contents of outbuildings can run into hundreds, even thousands of pounds.
In the UK in 2007, those who took out their contents insurance through Confused.com made an average claim of £587.94* for items stolen from their outbuildings. The highest claim made on a home insurance for theft from an outbuilding was made in the east of England, and amounted to £30,005. It’s enough to give anybody shed shock.
As such, insurance comparison website Confused.com recommend that those with valuable items in their sheds, garages or other outbuildings ensure that these are kept locked. In addition, Confused.com suggest that home insurance is considered – specifically contents cover for such items.
It is also prudent to list particularly high value items individually on a policy. To avoid any dispute in the event of a claim, those taking out contents insurance would do well take photos of all items they wish to cover. This, of course, applies to possessions kept in the house too – not just outbuildings.
