Cheshire: Bonfire Night insurance discount

Friday, 24 Oct 2008 12:16
Cheshire Building Society is offering 25 per cent off contents insurance in a bid to highlight the dangers bonfire night can pose to properties.

The discount, which is available for a limited period until November 14th, is available to all customers taking out the firm's Select Buildings and Contents insurance.

Cheshire believes that Bonfire Night is the ideal time to review existing home insurance policies. It said evidence showed many celebrations were ruined by damage to property or accidents caused by fires, sparklers or fireworks.

And it warned that while insurance policies would provide cover in case of damage to homes and contents, not all would pay out if there was damage to trees or plants or if there was an emergency.

Karen Torson of Cheshire said: "If you are thinking of having a bonfire, it's advisable to know in advance what your policy does and doesn't cover."

She also pointed out that it was important to be vigilant where home security was concerned.

Torson added: "In all the planning and preparation, people often forget to lock their doors and put on their alarms, leaving the ideal opportunity for burglars to enter a noisy accessible environment, without even being noticed."
