Insurer Norwich Union is joining forces with the police to help people safeguard their homes from burglary.
It is attempting to promote the message that while insurance is available if someone becomes a victim of crime, taking steps to prevent it in the first place is essential.
Research by the insurer found one in three people now fear their home is more vulnerable because of the credit crunch.
And 39 per cent said they felt more at risk of burglary when the clocks go back.
So Norwich Union and Norfolk Police launched the Safer Streets campaign to highlight some basic home security measures.
Simon Warsop, director of home pricing at Norwich Union, said: "Of course insurance is there to help when you are unfortunate enough to become a victim of crime.
"But no one wants to be burgled in the first place and the more we can all do to help protect our homes and our belongings, the better."
As part of the campaign Norwich Union provided the funding for eight homes to undergo security makeovers to show people how their homes can be made more secure.
The walls were replaced, new fencing was installed, additional lighting was put in place and new window locks were secured in a bid to improve their security.
