Pet owners looking for a higher level of insurance cover for their dog or cat can take advantage of new products from LV=.

Its new Essential and Premier insurance schemes cover vets' fees and include contributions toward advertising and potential rewards should a pet go missing or accidentally damage a third-party property.

They also cover the costs of boarding fees if the owner has to go into hospital.

Customers taking out the policies will also be given free access to several helplines including bereavement counselling for pet owners and legal advice.

Prices for both policies start at £5 per month for cats and £7 for dogs and begin once the pets are eight weeks old.

While the Essential plan, aimed at the budget-conscious pet owner, covers each condition for up to 12 months from the onset of the problem, the Premier product offers £5,000 per condition.

Andrew Beard, head of business development at LV= , said: "Pet insurance has never been more important for pet owners. As the types of treatment available increase, thanks to developments in medical technology, so do vet fees.

"Whereas five years ago many pet owners could have afforded the majority of treatment, now some claims run into thousands of pounds, meaning it is beyond many people's financial ability."
