Guard against airline collapse

Friday, 17 Oct 2008 12:11
Travellers can now insure against their airline going bust thanks to a new addition to Essentialtravel.co.uk's insurance policies.

The move comes following the collapse of several airlines earlier this year, which left many passengers buying flights directly and not from a travel agent stranded and out of pocket.

And it also follows research unveiled by the travel association, ABTA, which shows 58 per cent of holidaymakers are not sure if they were protected against a travel company or airline folding.

Essentialtravel.co.uk has called for more reassurance to be available to the millions of Brits preparing to travel abroad.

And it has also introduced scheduled airline failure insurance as standard to its Superior policies.

Stuart Bensusan, sales director for the insurer, said: "With over half of all British holidaymakers doubting their level of protection, the industry needs to act fast – giving as much advice, reassurance and protection to travellers as possible."

Bensusan also offered advice to travellers concerned about booking their holiday because of potential airline collapse.

He urged them to ensure their travel insurance included scheduled airline cover – but warned that most policies did not.

Booking packages holidays with an ABTA-registered travel firm, checking there was an ATOL number on the invoice and paying with credit card would also help guard against loss, he said.
