Debenhams Wedding Insurance is launching a new policy with cover for claims up to £70,000.

The Diamond Plus policy offers the highest level of cover in the UK for weddings and was brought out in response to the soaring cost of heading down the aisle.

Diamond Plus cover is available for £330 online and £354 over the telephone, although lower levels of cover with Gold and Platinum policies starts from £55.

Debenhams spokeswoman Diane Jackson said: "Debenhams is responding to a market demand, and our new top of the range policy is designed to cover weddings where the cost is up to three times that of the standard cost of a ceremony with all the bells and whistles."

Demand for high levels of cover has come particularly from the Asian community – with a third of British Asian weddings now costing over £30,000 with three-quarters having a guest list of at least 300.

The move towards foreign weddings – often in exotic destinations – has also raised the costs of getting hitched and the cover needed.

"It is nigh on impossible to pinpoint exactly how much a typical wedding is going to cost, but Debenhams is responding to a perceived market demand to get higher levels of cover in place – hence the introduction of our new £70k policy,” said Ms Jackson.

"Based on the evidence we have regarding demand for our service, you don’t have to be in the Katie Price-style mega wealthy bracket to spend the big bucks on the big day. Or come to that, Vanisha Mital - daughter of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal - who tied the knot in a lavish £30 million ceremony."
