HSBC is offering prospective homebuyers the chance to take advantage of a "bargain" priced discount mortgage while also helping a rainforest charity.
The mortgage lender is offering the new two-year fixed rate mortgage at the discount rate of 4.99 per cent to customers applying in branches or online up to January 31st 2008.
The product, which has a 1.76 per cent discount off the standard variable rate of 6.75 per cent, has a £1,999 arrangement fee and is being offered as part of the bank's 2008 sale.
The sale has seen HSBC link up with environmental charity WWF. The bank has promised to donate £2 from every sale of the new mortgage to the charity to support the HSBC Rainforest Preservation Project in Brazil.
John Shaw, coordinator of the HSBC Sale described the two-year discount fixed-rate mortgage as a "terrific deal".
He said he hoped the sale would enjoy the same success in 2008 as it did last year when it helped raise £750,000 for a range of environmental charities.
Mr Shaw added: "We don't expect customers to choose an HSBC sale product because it will contribute to the rainforest project – they will do so if a product meets their needs, is competitively priced and because they want to bank with HSBC.
"But it does give them a chance to make a contribution to a very worthwhile project, as well as raising awareness of one of the world's most important and threatened rainforest areas."
