Credit cards: Christmas shopping starts now

Recommended ...

Shoppers looking to fund Christmas on a 0% credit card are being urged to look for a card now.

With Christmas just nine weeks away, there are a number of credit cards on the market with 0% introductory deals.

"Credit cards offer a simple way to help spread the cost of Christmas when used correctly. However, people need to ensure the card they apply for is not going to end up costing them more than they can afford," said Rob Kenley, head of credit cards at moneysupermarket.com.

"Taking the time to shop around for cards now will ensure people have the right card when they hit the shops. Opting for a 0% deal means consumers using plastic for their Christmas spending pay nothing more than the cost of their goods – they just need to make sure the balance is paid off before the introductory offer ends."

There are currently a good number of firms offering 0% introductory deals for purchases, including

  • Halifax – 0% for 15 months (APR 14.9 per cent)
  • HSBC – 0% for 12 months (APR 15.9 per cent)
  • Sainsbury's Bank – 0% for 12 months (APR 15.9 per cent)
  • First Direct – 0% for 12 months (APR 16.9 per cent)

"There are currently some great deals around – with providers such as Halifax offering a whopping 15 months interest free on purchases which means people can do next year’s shopping on it too," Mr Kenley added.
