People moving to industry-leading energy and phone suppliers as well as the top credit cards, loans and current accounts can save themselves as much as £479 a year.
Independent switching service uSwitch.com finds that moving to better financial products can save £219 a year, changing to the cheapest energy provider can save you £140 a year, and by changing telephone savings of £120 are available.
"We estimate that consumers could save over £10 billion in 2006 simply by switching their credit card, personal loan and/or current account to the most competitive deal," said Nick White, head of personal finance at uSwitch.
"As bills hit the doormat in the new year, many consumers will find themselves struggling to make repayments. But, by making the right financial choices consumers can limit the damage and stop it having an impact on the rest of the year. Debt has become a way of life for many, and if it is managed sensibly and people are borrowing within their means, it can be controlled."

Turning to energy, Tim Wolfenden, product strategy manager at uSwitch, noted: "Christmas is an expensive time of year, and those cold winter nights in can also lead to hefty energy bills.
"With more price hikes predicted, this situation could worsen. Householders who have never switched before can potentially be paying 20 per cent more on energy bills than is necessary. By switching gas and electricity suppliers consumers can make annual savings of £140, amounting to £3.3 billion collectively."

Moving on to phone bills, uSwitch home phone product manager Chris Williams said: "As a nation we are gradually getting better at understanding the benefits of switching our home phone supplier, yet there are still thousands of people wasting money on their bills. Each of those households who have failed to switch are sacrificing savings of £120 on average every year which collectively exceeds £1.5 billion."
