British Gas raises energy prices

Tuesday, 04 December 2007 12:00

Rumours energy bills could be on their way up again were confirmed today as British Gas increased its gas and electricity prices with immediate effect.

Calculations by comparison website uSwitch.com reveals prices of British Gas' tracker energy tariff have gone up by 13 and 15 per cent for gas and electricity respectively.

The figures are based on a customer who uses a "medium" amount of gas and electricity - 20,500 kWh of gas and 3,300 kWh of electricity a year, averaged across the country.

The comparison site explained the move comes after British Gas' first look at its tracker plan prices, three months after the energy plan was launched in September.

"While there is nothing sinister in the timing, the increase in prices could be seen as a sign of things to come. It supports market rumours prices are going to be on the up again, which will be a concern for consumers," said Tim Wolfenden, head of home services at uSwitch.

He added: "The tracker product is designed to track wholesale energy prices. It is aimed at a specific type of consumer who does not mind taking a chance on bills going up, as well as down, on a far more frequent basis.

"Those who have signed up may be disappointed that only a few months in and prices are already going up. But if market rumours turn into reality then many more consumers may be facing the same disappointment too."
