British Gas to give out 52m energy saving light bulbs
British Gas is to give its customers 52 million energy savings light bulbs.
Each of the energy provider's 13 million customers will receive four free light bulbs along with energy savings tips - in a move that the firm claims will save nine million tonnes of CO2.
The energy saving light bulbs have an average life expectancy of 10,000 hours - compared to standard light bulbs' 750 hours.
The reduced energy use of four light bulbs adds up to £17 a year, as lighting accounts for 15 per cent of a homes carbon footprint, according to the energy provider.
Gearoid Lane, director of British Gas New Energy, said: "Switching to energy saving light bulbs is a small step but one which can make a big difference.
"We know that our customers want to reduce their carbon footprint and also save money. Through our distribution of 52 million energy saving light bulbs, we will be providing them with an opportunity to do both. And as the largest energy retailer in the UK, we are the only company able to deliver an initiative on this scale."
The bulbs will be sent to homes directly during May.
