New consumer champion named

The government is establishing a new consumer rights body.

From October 1st Consumer Focus will take on the roles of National Consumer Council, energywatch and Postwatch, with greater powers.

Gareth Thomas, consumer affairs minister, said: "One body, rather than three, means a stronger voice fighting for consumers. It means a joined up and co-ordinated approach to tackling problems, rather than the old fragmented system."

He added the body would campaign hard for better deals for consumers and do "all it can to help people through this period of uncertainty".

Consumer Focus will be headed by economist Ed Mayo, current chief executive of the National Consumer Council.

"At a time of rising food, fuel and mortgage costs, there could not be a better time to see a new consumer champion come forward and campaign for people," he said.

"From this autumn, we will build on the good work of our predecessors to win a better deal for consumers."

In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland separate Consumer Focus bodies will be established.
