Minimum wage rises to £5.80

National minimum wage to rise to £5.80 an hour

The UK minimum wage will rise by 1.2 per cent, or 7p, to £5.80 an hour from October despite calls from business leaders to freeze the rate.

Jobless rate rises to 7.1%

Jobless rate rises to 7.1 per cent

The unemployment rate has risen to 7.1 per cent to reach 2.2 million, the largest quarterly increase in unemployment since 1981.
