Mobile phone applications are quickly becoming a mainstay techno-holics and technophobes, but there are ways they could help to save you money and not just pass the time on the commute.
The iTunes app store now has seen over two billion downloads of app - but away from the games and virtual whoopee cushions are some real ways to help you save money.
ShopSavvy is available on both the iPhone and phones using Google's Android operating system.
The app makes shopping around for the best deals on books and DVDs much easier.
Using the phones camera you can scan the barcode on a product and compare prices across the net and at local stores.
The app quickly links to where you can find the same product cheaper online at sites such as Amazon or at shops just round the corner.
Matthew Bacon recently downloaded ShopSavvy to his phone: "I was in Waterstones and I just checked to see if I was getting the best price.
"I was so I bought it there and then. If I could have saved a couple quid and gone down the road or gone online I would have."
A further app to save money on telephone calls has been 0870.
Certain 0870, 0845 and 080 numbers that firms use can be costly to call from mobiles.
The app finds alternative landline numbers to contact firms - which can be included in your monthly call allowance or a lot cheaper for pay as you go users.
Online SayNoTo0870.com offers a similar service.
Saving money on calls is also possible using the Skype app on the iPhone, Windows Mobile or Nokia N800/N810 or other VoIP call services.
Using Skype you can make free Skype-to-Skype calls from Wi-Fi points as well as instant messaging. Skype calls and texts can also be cheaper than using the phone as normal in some cases.
There are also a good number of apps about to help budgeting - so you can write down all your outgoings as you spend and keep on top of your finances.
