Sainsbury's offers online money advice

Sainsbury's Finance has launched a new website offering independent financial advice in a bid to quash the nation's money worries.

Money Matters aims to explore financial concerns and questions people have as a result of the credit crunch and recession and offers hints and tips on dealing with problems.

The launch comes as Sainsbury's uncovered evidence that almost one in five people in debt and in a relationship were hiding the true extent of their debt from their partner or spouse.

Eight per cent of those questioned admitted to frequently missing bill payment deadlines. And seven per cent said they either ignored or delayed opening bank statements or envelopes which looked like bills.

Karen Horsburgh, head of Money Matters, said the economic climate had increased people's personal financial concerns and the research showed many were sticking their head in the sand, hoping it would go away.

"However, if you have money worries," she said, "the best course of action is to tackle any financial concerns head on.

"We've launched Money Matters because we want to provide a resource where people can go and get independent tips and advice on everyday concerns, regardless of whether they consider their current financial situation to be in good order or not."
