Half of British workers feel they are being paid less than they deserve, according to a new survey.
The study by the Institute of Payroll Professionals (IPP) found that six per cent of employees think that they are considerably undervalued by their company.
Some 66 per cent of respondents said that they would ask for a pay rise if they discovered that someone in a similar role was on a higher salary.
Another 20% claimed that they would threaten to quit their role because they felt undervalued, but would stay if they were offered a higher wage.
IPP chief executive Lindsay Melvin said that as the economy slowly recovers and fears of redundancy ease, it is important for employers to make their staff feel valued.
"Employees who were unhappy in their jobs during the worst part of the recession may start looking for other opportunities elsewhere," he commented.
According to the Office for National Statistics, average weekly pay excluding bonuses stood at £426 in January.
