With a bank holiday weekend approaching, Britons are being warned of the dangers - and potential costs - of biting off more than they can chew when it comes to DIY.

Research by M&S Money shows that 64% of adults would carry out home improvements themselves rather than calling in a professional.

However, the company said that with over 200,000 people admitted to hospital every year with DIY-related injuries, it is crucial that homeowners consider whether they have the necessary skills for their planned jobs.

It added that DIY disasters can also prove costly unless adequate accidental damage cover is in place - and even simple tasks can go awry, with 20% of respondents to its survey admitting to spilling paint on carpets and floors while decorating.

The company's findings come after research by Santander showed that 14 per cent of people carrying out DIY work have inadvertently damaged their home, with the average repair bill topping £344.
