With wedding season on the horizon, new research has revealed that Britons spend an average of £380 a year seeing their friends or relatives tie the knot.

The survey by Santander put the annual combined cost of attending weddings at £10.45 billion.

Travel and accommodation is the biggest expense for guests at £210, ahead of buying a wedding present (£131), purchasing an outfit (£123) and the cost of going on a hen or stag night (£114).

Over a quarter (26%) of those questioned by the lender said that they have been forced to cut the amount they spend at weddings as a result of economic conditions.

Emma Roberts of Santander said: "It's easy to overlook the cost involved in being a wedding guest but the outlay can be significant, both before and during the big day."

According to Defaqto, the average cost of putting on a wedding now stands at over £20,000.
