Over half of British broadband users could be paying over the odds for inferior services because they do not shop around for the best deals, according to a new study.

Research carried out by Broadbandchoices.co.uk showed that 56.3% of 6,000 broadband customers questioned had not switched providers in the past three years.

Over the same period, the average price of a stand-alone broadband package has dropped by 34%, while the typical connection speed had risen by 130%.

The site's product director Michael Phillips said: "Broadband is now perceived as an essential utility, yet it is so often overlooked when households look to cut their monthly bills."

He added that customers looking to change their broadband package should compare the deals in their area using an Ofcom-approved comparison site, haggle with their current provider for a better deal and bundle their internet with phone and digital TV services.

According to the Office for National Statistics, almost two-thirds (63%) of UK households had a broadband connection in 2009.
