FSA to go as Bank of England gets increased powers

The chancellor announced the end of the FSA in his first Mansion House speech last night

The Financial Services Authority (FSA) is to be abolished and the Bank of the England (BoE) given new powers to prevent another financial crisis, the chancellor George Osborne confirmed in his Mansion House speech last night.

May saw sharp drop in consumer confidence, says Nationwide

Consumer confidence suffered a sharp decline in May.

A string of "unsettling" events during May, including the general election, the formation of the new government and the eurozone debt crisis, contributed to a sharp drop in consumer confidence, according to Nationwide.

Unemployment climbs to 2.47m

Unemployment rose to 2.47 million in the three months to April.

UK unemployment rose by 23,000 over the three months to April to stand at 2.47 million.
