Ofcom releases broadband access findings

Some regulation is still required in the wholesale broadband access market as it is not yet effectively competitive in all areas, according to one regulator.

A report by Ofcom found that further overseeing of internet services may become unnecessary and the limits of current broadband networks are being tested due to an increase in downloading and streaming.

One of the biggest challenges faced by the competition authority is to adapt its current controlling framework as super-fast internet connections emerge.

Within the UK, Ofcom reveals 80 per cent of the country benefits from effective competition among providers while the remaining fifth does not -and it is this area that has had tighter regulations imposed in order to protect customers.
