Brits 'plan to give cheques for Christmas'

Millions of Britons are planning to give their loved ones cheques this Christmas, it has emerged.

Despite the downward trend in putting pen to paper in this way, seven million UK residents will give cheques as festive gifts, research from consumer watchdog Which? has shown.

Among the findings is that 50 per cent of Britons have written a cheque in the last month, while 37 million - or 76 per cent - have written one on the last year.

Common uses for cheques were shown to include paying tradesmen or suppliers, school costs and presents.

Which? chief executive Peter Vicary-Smith said: "Cheques may be in decline but millions of us still use them every year, whether it's to pay for tradesmen, for a school trip or as gifts to loved ones."

He added that banks must make sure consumers are comfortable with alternative payment methods before cheques become obsolete.
