British Gas has been hailed as Britain's cheapest energy supplier after cutting gas prices and unveiling a new online tariff.

The accolade was handed to the company by uSwitch which described today's announcement by British Gas that it was to cut prices by seven per cent as a 'major charm offensive'.

USwitch also urged households to seriously consider ditching their standard energy plans in favour of online deals, as this can help make massive savings.

Emma Bush, energy expert at uSwitch, said: "Moving to dual fuel, paying by direct debit and signing up to an online plan will cut your bills by around £300."

She said British Gas' newly-launched online tariff was the cheapest on the market.

"British Gas' new WebSaver 6, launched today, comes in at £899 a year. Given that the average household energy bill was £912 in January 2009 this plan is offering consumers the chance to take their energy bills back to pre-2008 prices."
