Last of the big six joins "price cut bonanza"

The last member of the UK's big six energy suppliers - ScottishPower - has joined its rivals in announcing cuts to its standard gas prices.
From March 31st, the provider's charges will fall by an average of eight per cent, or around £66 a year. The move is expected to benefit approximately 1.9 million households.
The announcement follows price cuts by British Gas, E.ON, EDF Energy, npower and Scottish and Southern Energy.
Scott Byrom, manager of utilities at comparison service moneysupermarket.com, said that while there appears to have been a "flurry of activity" in the energy market, consumers will see little difference in their bills as the majority of the tariff changes do not come into effect until the end of the month.
So far, only British Gas has implemented its announced reductions.
Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at Confused.com, added that the timing of the price cuts made them "too little, too late" as the worst of the cold weather is over.
However, he urged consumers to take advantage of the new plans on the market to shop around to make sure they are getting the best deal on their gas and electricity.
