Second energy supplier announces price cuts

Scottish and Southern Energy has followed British Gas by announcing price cuts for its dual fuel customers.
According to comparison service uSwitch.com, the company will reduce its standard dual fuel gas rates by four per cent from March 29th.
This will reduce the average annual bill for customers getting their gas and electricity from the supplier from £1,192 to £1,162.
Nevertheless, Scottish and Southern Energy's yearly charges will still be 33 per cent, or £287, higher than they were in January 2008, it noted.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said the company's move is "great news" for customers but she called on more suppliers to introduce price cuts of their own.
"The fact that the country's two biggest suppliers have acted to bring their prices down will put more pressure on the remaining four suppliers to do the same, but there are still no guarantees," she commented.
Along with British Gas and Scottish and Southern Energy, the other members of the UK's big six energy suppliers are E.ON, npower, EDF Energy and ScottishPower.
However, earlier this week, uSwitch.com said a "relative newcomer", First:Utility, had become the country's cheapest dual fuel supplier.
