E.ON has followed fellow big six energy suppliers British Gas and Scottish and Southern Energy by announcing it will cut its gas prices by six per cent from March 31st.

The move, which is expected to benefit around 1.9 million households, will reduce E.ON's average annual bill for dual fuel from £1,232 to £1,185, according to uSwitch.com.

It added that the supplier's annual gas and electricity charges are still £272 a year higher than they were in January 2008.

The comparison service said that with 2009's reductions included, E.ON has now cut its prices by nine per cent or £112, while Scottish and Southern Energy has knocked eight per cent (£97) off its annual bills and British Gas has reduced its charges by 13 per cent (£170).

Ann Robinson, uSwitch.com's director of consumer policy, said: "This is great news for consumers as the fact that three of the big six suppliers have reduced prices puts the remaining three under intense pressure to follow suit."

Gareth Kloet of Confused.com added that the latest price cuts highlight the importance of shopping around for the best deal on energy tariffs.
