Debt problems 'biggest regret for Brits in 2010'

Brits have highlighted debt problems as their biggest regret of 2010, new figures have suggested.

More than half (53 per cent) of individuals polled in a first direct survey said they wish they had paid off their arrears more quickly last year.

Other financial concerns on individuals' minds were failing to save for a pension early enough (37 per cent) and spending too much cash on gifts during the Christmas period (18 per cent).

When asked about specific areas of their monetary situation with which they are unhappy, 82 per cent picked the level of debt on credit cards.

Senior savings product manager at first direct Richard Brown said: "Paying off debts quickly where possible prevents interest charges from rising and rising."

Recent statistics from moneysupermarket.com found nearly half of Brits realise they could make substantial savings if they examined their spending, but fail to do so.
