Brits 'staying in on NYE'

Wednesday, 12 January 2011 07:41

More than 70 per cent of people are choosing to stay indoors this New Year's Eve rather than venture outside, new figures have revealed.

Data from Post Office Financial and Travel Services found that 13 per cent blamed their finances as the reason for celebrating at home, while six per cent cited the weather.

However, those hoping to save some pennies by avoiding going out could face a false economy, the organisation claimed.

It noted that splashing out on food and drink for friends and family will cost the average person £95 on the night, while those spending their time in the pub or a club will only spend £57 and £73 respectively.

The statistics showed that, despite this, seven per cent of people will host a dinner party this year.

This followed around £555 million worth of spending individuals did on Christmas Eve, according to Sainsbury's Finance.
