Phone customers advised to check bills

Monday, 31 January 2011 02:10

People with a mobile or landline have been told to examine their phone bills for January to check the rate of VAT they have been charged.

According to uSwitch.com, some major phone firms - including Orange, Three, T-Mobile and Virgin Media - are charging December phone usage at the new 20 per cent rate of VAT, despite the calls and texts being made before the rise took effect on January 4th.

Ernest Doku, communications expert at uSwitch.com, stated the phone firms will not make any extra money from charging a higher rate as it all goes to the Inland Revenue.

He advised customers who believe they have been unfairly charged to "contact their provider and ask for a refund".
