Government announces smart meter roll out
The Department of Energy and Climate Change has set out its plans for the rollout and installation of 53 million smart meters in 30 million homes and businesses across the UK.
Announcing the scheme secretary of state for energy and climate change Chris Huhne said that smart meters are integral to controlling energy use in the home and helping homeowners reduce waste and spend on bills thakns to real-time energy readings.
By 2020, the average consumer is predicted to cut their gas and electricity bill by roughly £23 per year and estimated billing will become a thing of the past.
It is hoped that suppliers will be able to better their customer service thanks to improved billing data.
Smart meter roll out will also mean the end of visits to homes to read old meters and hopefully improved debt handling.
Zoe McLeod, energy expert at Consumer Focus, said that while she welcomes the move, there is still some work to do.
"To get the full benefits of this new technology customers will need support and advice on how to cut their bills and action to ensure that improvements in customer service are delivered," she said.
