Each household in the UK is set to spend £267 on celebrating the Royal Wedding, according to research by the Co-operative Bank.

The findings reveal that the country is planning to join in with the celebrations as food and drink are the main areas of spending with £126 per household expected to be spent on food and drink. Travel (£41), clothes (£42) and decorations at £29 per household are the other main areas of expense planned by UK households on the Royal Wedding on April 29th.

The research from the Co-op also reveals that as long as the weather continues in the same vein, a barbeque is set to be the most popular way of celebrating Prince William and Katherine Middleton’s wedding, with 27 per cent of respondents planning one.

26 per cent of people plan to gather around a TV to watch the wedding, whilst 16 per cent plan to visit a restaurant or pub. Just over one in ten, 13 per cent plan to attend a street party.

The research also revealed that weddings in general are an area that people regularly fail to budget for effectively. A third of wedding guests admitted to overspending by an average of £115 each time.

John Hughes, Director of Retail Banking at The Co-operative Bank, said: "Events like the Royal Wedding don't come around every day and people naturally want to celebrate and mark the occasion. By ensuring that their spending is planned and budgeted for, people can ensure that they are spending within their means and can enjoy the excitement of the day, without worrying about a financial hangover in the aftermath".
