Mobile broadband speeds hit average of 1.5 Mbps

Figures published by Ofcom show how mobile broadband speeds are now rivalling some fixed-line broadband connections, at an average of 1.5 Mbps each.

This puts loading times of basic web pages at 8.5 seconds, the study - which was conducted in collaboration with web analyst Epitiro - indicates.

O2 delivers the fastest internet of all, with the networks 3 and Vodafone close behind.

T-Mobile and Orange fared less well than their counterparts on raw speed, but Ofcom points out that latency - how quickly the server responds to a request to load a page - complicates the picture somewhat.

As 4G access begins to become commonplace, the performance of mobile broadband connections could improve still further.

Ofcom recently noted that the new technology means the same portion of the electromagnetic spectrum - the range of wireless frequencies that can transmit data - can carry more than twice the amount of information than by using 3G.
