High bills 'burning' mobile phone users on holiday
Price comparison site uSwitch.com has reported that 22 million people across the UK were "burnt" by the high price of mobile phone usage during their summer holiday last year.
In particular, the company has raised concerns that many people head abroad with no idea of the roaming charges they will face.
Upon returning to the UK, they have no idea how much their next mobile phone bill will be for.
Almost half of all Britons - 49 per cent of the population - have faced a bill averaging £149 each on returning from a holiday, uSwitch.com says.
With the summer holiday season approaching, 33 million holidaymakers are expected to take their phone abroad - up by half on last year.
Ernest Doku, technology expert at uSwitch.com, says: "If you really can't do without your mobile while you are away, at the very least you should make sure you understand the charges."
Travellers may also want to make sure they have insurance cover in place in case their handset becomes lost, stolen or damaged by water or sand while abroad.
In May, the top handsets sold in the UK were the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Apple iPhone 4 16 GB model - worth upwards of £400, depending on where they were purchased.
