Mobile phone services 'set for improvements'

Tuesday, 21 June 2011 01:01

Consumers will be able to benefit from more reliable and faster mobile phone services in future.

That is according to Ofcom, which has today (June 21st) given approval to companies to trade the rights they hold to the radio spectrum, something the body believes will lead to more efficient use of the system.

It noted that at present there is a high level of demand being placed on the mobile spectrum, stating: "There are 80 million mobiles in the UK and more than 12.8 million of these are smartphones, used by people to access the internet."

Ofcom, which will ensure deals maintain a fair level of competition, believes firms with a need for more spectrum will be able to make an offer to companies that are already well served.

The move follows government instructions to Ofcom, made last December, to make the licences tradeable as part of a scheme to improve mobile phone services in the UK.
