Ofgem to probe ScottishPower for Direct October 2012 pricing promise
ScottishPower is facing investigation by Ofgem to determine whether it acted illegally in advertising its Direct October 2012 special offer tariff earlier this month.
Ofgem is clamping down on misleading practices among the UK's major utility providers and says "the evidence will be examined before conclusions are reached".
However, it adds that it committed in March to vigorously pursuing instances of where electricity and gas suppliers seem to act outside of the law.
In its current investigation, it is focusing on ScottishPower's claim that savings of £459 could be made by subscribing to its ScottishPower Direct tariff under the 'October 2012' offer.
The tariff was announced on June 7th, the same day the company raised its prices by an average of ten per cent for electricity and 19 per cent for gas, with the new pricing effective from August 1st.
At the time, ScottishPower claimed the online-only October 2012 offer made it the cheapest web-based product available.
The claim was based on publicly accessible information from its main rivals and was one of a number of observations made by the firm on June 7th.
It also asserted that its January 2015 offer on its Fixed Price Energy tariff was the longest price guarantee available in the UK energy market on the day.
