uSwitch welcomes drop in mobile call charges

The drop in mobile call charges in the European Union has been welcomed by comparison site uSwitch, although it is keen to see how new regulations address the problem of data roaming tariffs.

Technology expert with the company Ernest Doku noted that people have been victim to "extortionate" mobile charges while abroad for too long, with average bills following a holiday reaching £149.

"By lowering call charges to a manageable level, consumers now have the freedom to make and receive calls at a more affordable cost," he remarked, commenting on the fact that EU charges will drop from 35p to 32p a minute.

In addition, calls taken while people are overseas in the EU will cost no more than ten pence a minute - a drop of 42 per cent in two years.

Mr Doku continued, saying that while this is only a small reduction, it is a move in the right direction.
