The Royal Mail has announced on its website that it is recruiting 18,000 temporary staff this Christmas.
The Christmas period is traditionally the busiest time of the year for the postal service.
A fall in postal volumes in the UK means that the Post Office is recruiting 2,000 fewer temporary workers than over the same period last year.
The Post Office says that a variety of shifts are available between mid November and early January, with the majority of shifts available in December to cover the increase in post in the run up to Christmas.
The temporary jobs are spread over the UK. The Post Office website reveals that they will be recruiting for 3,000 workers in the Midlands, 2,000 each in the Thames Valley, Scotland, the South East, the North East and the South West, 1,500 in the North West and East Anglia, 1,000 in Wales and 400 in Northern Ireland.
Temporary workers will be employed in mail and distribution centres to sort Christmas cards and packages. The Post Office says that it will be sorting more than 130 million items every day in the peak period, more than double normal volumes.
Last year, 70,000 people applied for the 20,000 temporary jobs available over the Christmas period.
