Consumers urged to shop around for line rental

Homephonechoices.co.uk, part of Consumer Choices, has urged Britons to shop around for the best price for line rental on their landlines.

It warned that there have been 11 price hikes this year from the major home telecoms providers, with average line rental now costing around £160 a year.

Michael Phillips, product director at Homephonechoices.co.uk, said this charge is often forgotten by householders trying to make savings, even though there are big variations in prices from various companies.

For instance, deals from Primus through Homephonechoices.co.uk can cost as little as £6.49 a month, saving up to £80 over the course of a year.

"It is essential that consumers don't take these price hikes lying down ... you may be surprised by what you can save," Mr Phillips commented.

Other money-saving tips offered included paying by direct debit, going for paperless billing and always checking the small print when signing up for rolling contracts.

Homephonechoices.co.uk is the UK's only Ofcom accredited home phone comparison calculator and was founded in 2005.
