EDF Energy to cut gas bills by five per cent

EDF Energy has announced it is to cut its gas bills by five per cent from February 7th 2012, a move that is likely to be welcomed by homeowners on the firm's tariffs.

It increased its bills by 15.4 per cent in November last year, but has now said they will be reduced due to a 9.2 per cent decline in the cost of wholesale gas.

However, there has been no announcement with regard to EDF's electricity prices.

The move comes after speculation that British Gas is also to reduce its gas bills by ten per cent.

EDF chief executive Vincent de Rivaz said the company was the last to raise its tariffs in 2011 and is now the first to respond to wholesale prices and make cuts.

"What customers want more than anything else is fair, clear and transparent prices. We know they want action rather than words," he added.

Meanwhile, a survey carried out by Which? has discovered that four million complaints were received in 2011 about the big six energy companies British Gas, EDF Energy, Eon, Npower, SSE and Scottish Power.

Some 40 per cent of consumers have had a problem with them in the last eight weeks, with the most common being mistakes on bills, inaccurate meter readings and missing bills.

Thousands were unresolved after two months and EDF Energy was second bottom in the table of most complained-about firms.
