Kit Car Insurance: Building your own protection

Kit cars owners are no exception to usual car insurance laws. In fact, because they are a more specialist vehicle, they often require their very own tailored car insurance policies before they are fit to travel safely on UK roads.

The mere fact kit cars are built lovingly by their owners means drivers are keen to get the most sophisticated policies for their pride and joys. Many fall under the specialist banner which means dedicated insurers exist to cater for the insurance needs of kit cars.

Kit car insurance provides cover in case of accident, fire, theft, damage and all the other events general car insurance is designed to safeguard.

However, many policies also provide cover while the car is being collected and built. So, if you lose parts whilst they are in transit, you can claim back the cost of replacements. You can also recover costs of parts which are stolen while you are in the process of creating the car.

As many people take their kit cars to rallies and race them at track days, insurance can also include cover for damage whilst racing.

Reasons to have kit car insurance

Not only is there a legal requirement – if you plan to drive your kit car on the UK roads – to hold insurance but kit cars also face dangers other vehicles are not exposed to.

There is a chance parts can go missing or be damaged while the owner is building the vehicle and kit car insurance – unlike mainstream car insurance – will cover for this eventuality. There is also more chance, as kit cars are often raced on the track at rallies, in them suffering damage. Many of the high street insurers, therefore, might refuse to insure them or quote ridiculously high premiums to scare off their customer.

Above all kit cars are often the hobby or project of their proud owner so a tailored policy rather than your plain old car insurance policy will provide you with greater peace of mind.

How to buy kit car insurance

Many of the leading insurers provide policies specifically for kit cars and are well worth checking out. But there are also specialist insurers and brokers which pride themselves in being experts in the area – the staff are often fanatics themselves – who will be able to advise you on the best deal.

If you are a member of a kit car club, you will often be entitled to discounts on premiums, particularly with the specialist insurers. Your age, gender and experience of driving will all be taken into consideration when providing quotes.

Pitfalls
Some insurers will only provide discounts on premiums to over-21s – but this is universal in the car insurance world.

The mere fact you have a classic car will land you with higher premiums than your every-day run-around will. The more sophisticated cover kit car insurance provides you with, however, should make up for the financial costs.
