Brits urged to check overseas breakdown cover

UK residents taking a road-trip overseas this bank holiday are being urged to check their breakdown cover.

This is because foreign use and European breakdown cover, while not necessarily top of the things people look for when deciding on their car insurance, become "essential" if they plan to drive abroad, Find.co.uk argues.

"Foreign use" cover will either be automatically included as a standard cover on your policy, or can be bought as an optional extra.

Included foreign use cover normally provides a set period of free cover subject to the total number of days you can take abroad in a policy year and the total number of days you spend abroad per trip.

Additionally, some car insurance providers do not offer breakdown cover either in the UK or Europe.

Only Marks & Spencer provides UK and European breakdown cover automatically, Find reports.

Providers such as the AA, Greenflag and RAC sell standalone European breakdown cover.

But while car insurance polices rarely include overseas breakdown cover as standard, if you have a "premier" bank account you might have breakdown cover included as one of the freebies provided.

The simple message is to check before you head overseas, rather than find out you are not covered while on the side of a foreign motorway thousands of miles from home.

"Whatever your overseas motoring plans this summer, make sure you are covered for all the countries you intend to visit and against the eventuality of a breakdown," said Find marketing director Kate Marsden.
