2 in 3 motorists not driving to new insurance

Two-thirds of British drivers are failing to switch car insurance companies when renewing policies.

One in ten motorists have never switched insurer or have stayed with the same firm for ten years, according to research by TescoCompare.com.

Those that stick with a particular company do so because of the cover and policy features offered by an insurer.

"There are a great proportion of motorists out there who aren't searching for the best deal for their car insurance and who are instead staying with their current car insurance provider," said Peter Dingle, managing director of TescoCompare.

"It seems that these people are the ones valuing policy features and the level of cover provided above the cheapest policy available."

Generally Brits are getting in the habit of shopping around for better deals.

Some 32 per cent have switched insurance providers in the last 12 months, 23 per cent one to two years ago and a further 23 per cent three to four years ago.

Research by Sainsbury's shows the average car insurance premium in the first half of the year was £486.43, up 2.9 per cent on the end of 2006 - with drivers under 25 paying the most at £1253.71, up 11.2 per cent.
